Coming Soon: Live Appeals Court Session

Coming Soon: Live Appeals Court Session

On Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 11:30 a.m., the A.P.E.X. Event Series will host a live Court of Appeals session in the Great Hall in the Hunter Conference Center. The case scheduled is State vs. Robertson, and the judges presiding will be Gregory K. Orme, Jill M. Pohlman, and David N. Mortensen. Please check www.suuapex.com or www.suu.edu/apex for details about the event.

This event will be free and open to the public. Because of extra security precautions, please plan on arriving early to the event. No firearms or weapons of any kind permitted, including legal carry.

State vs Robertson is an appeals case involving Thad Robertson who previously admitted to killing two people, one accidentally and the second as self-defense. Robertson currently claims that his case should be reversed because the judge allowed a jury of eight, instead of twelve. Robertson has also claimed that evidence that was previously presented does not support his conviction, along with the ineffectiveness of his trial attorney.

There will be three justices at the Court of Appeals session: Judge Gregory K. Orme, Judge Jill M. Pohlman and Judge David N. Mortensen.

Judge Gregory K. Orme was appointed to the Utah Court of Appeals by Gov. Norman H. Bangerter in January 1987. He is the court's Associate Presiding Judge.

Judge Jill M. Pohlman was appointed to the Utah Court of Appeals in May 2016 by Governor Gary Herbert. Judge Pohlman graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Utah in 1993, and received her Juris Doctorate from the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah in 1996, where she served on the Utah Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif.

Judge David N. Mortensen was appointed to the Utah Court of Appeals in May 2016 by Gov. Gary M. Herbert. Prior to his appointment, Judge Mortensen served as a trial judge in the Fourth District Court for almost ten years. He served multiple terms as the presiding judge and associate presiding judge of the Fourth District Court.
